Mission Overview We are pleased to bring you information concerning an opportunity to partner with us in bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the coffee growing region of Colombia. The three major cities in this area are Pereira, Manizales and Armenia.
Since August 2002, we have been working in this area establishing foundational relationships with local leaders from the entire three state region we are targeting. Our vision includes coming alongside the local leadership to identify the areas God has prepared to receive the gospel and assist them in planting churches in those communities. We will help train and equip church leaders with the intent of releasing pastors, teachers and missionaries in the work of evangelism. We will also equip and send Colombian missionaries to bring the gospel to other countries.
Within this region are numerous other cities, some in excess of 100,000 people. They have no established churches. Many of them have never had the gospel preached in their communities. False religions, witchcraft and paganism currently control the region.
Coffee Growing Region Colombia, the fourth largest country in South America, is located in the northwest corner of the continent with coasts on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The Departments of Caldas, Risaralda, and Quindío are in the Greater Antioquia region of Colombia. Until recently, little attempt was made to translate the Bible into indigenous languages and its use among the laity was not encouraged by the clergy. Since 1610, the Inquisition effectively prevented the development of non-Catholic religions. At the turn of the century, Colombia finds itself in the grip of violence, with guerrilla, para-military groups, and the army in frequent combat. The drug trade continues. The government is plagued with corruption. New Age ideas attract the middle class. Satanism and witchcraft is widespread. While old traditions are fast falling, it is a time of unprecedented openness to the gospel.
Pereira Pereira is the capitol of the Department of Risaralda. It is centrally located in the “el eje cafetero”, or coffee region. There is a population of 585,000 within the city proper and 993,000 total in the metropolitan area. Less than 1% are Christian with 35 evangelical churches in Risaralda having about 4,000 members.
Manizales Manizales is the capitol of the Department of Caldas located directly north of Pereira. Thousands are responding to the gospel. The population is 350,000 with 1,146,000 people in the surrounding area. There are 4,000 church members in 22 churches in Caldas. Less than 1% of the total population are born again.
Armenia Armenia is the capitol of the Department of Quindio. There is a population of 593,000. The city has a population of 300,000. Less than 1% are Christian with only 20 evangelical churches and a total of about 3,000 members.
